S4 Sweets: The Long-Distance Family Empire
The “Aha!” Moment (Or: How to Shrink the Ocean) Some business journeys begin with a spreadsheet. Mine began because I missed my family—and I saw an opportunity. A friend of mine started shipping simple ma’amoul to the West, and I thought, “If traditional cookies can travel that far, maybe my family’s legacy can too.” I wasn’t just looking for a business; I was looking for a way to bridge the gap between my new life in Canada and my roots.
The Remote R&D Department (Mom & Sister) I grew up in a house where my mother, Sawsan, and my sister, Tasneem, didn’t just bake; they engineered happiness. Their ma’amoul was legendary—the kind people visited specifically to eat. Now, even though we aren’t in the same kitchen, their standards are the law. They spent days refining the formulas to ensure they were perfect: clean, healthy, and structurally sound enough for industrial production. Think of them as our Chief Quality Officers, operating remotely. If the flavor isn’t right, we feel the disappointment all the way from across the ocean.
The “Virtual” Technical Support Team While the women handled the flavor profile, the men handled the heavy metal. My brothers, Mohammad and Abdulrahman, spent years mastering import/export and factory operations in Jordan. My father, Ismail, is a veteran of heavy machinery. They can’t be here to hold the wrench, but their practical knowledge is the blueprint for everything we do. We are basically running a multinational corporation via family group chat.
The Boots on the Ground (The Canadian Chapter) That leaves the execution team: Me (Hussein) and my brother Bilal. We are the only two here in Canada, which means we are the ones who had to face the “IKEA Nightmare.” When the factory equipment arrived, it was completely disassembled. There was no team of engineers to help us—just two brothers, a lot of parts, and a lot of determination. We assembled every piece by hand, turning a pile of metal into a factory. We weren’t just building machines; we were building a home away from home.
The “Stalking Strangers” Strategy Since my family couldn’t be here to taste-test every batch, I had to find new testers. I personally ambushed over 300 people across London and the GTA. The feedback was unanimous: they loved it. Some ate it with coffee, some as a breakfast snack. It proved what I always suspected: Ma’amoul isn’t just an “Arab sweet”; it’s a global language.
The Vision: A Bridge Made of Cookies S4 Sweets is more than a factory. It is how we stay close. It is a bridge between cultures, but also a bridge between us and the family we miss. Our vision is to start in Canada, expand to the US and Europe, and eventually take this global.
We are building this dream on Canadian soil, but the heart of the operation beats wherever our family is.
